Why Waxed Canvas Refuses to Die

Spend any amount of time looking at modern outdoor gear and you'll find some impressive materials. Today's fabrics are lighter, stronger, and more water resistant than anything the old woodsmen could have imagined. For backpacking especially, modern materials have allowed us to carry lighter loads while remaining comfortable in conditions that once required considerably heavier equipment.
With all of these improvements, you would think waxed canvas would have disappeared a long time ago. Instead, it continues to show up in packs, haversacks, tool rolls, axe carriers, saw bags, tarps, jackets, and all sorts of outdoor gear. In the bushcraft world, it has actually become more popular again.
I don't think that's an accident, and I don't think it's entirely nostalgia either.
I have worked with canvas for years, both using it in the field and making outdoor gear from it, and there are some things it simply does very well. It is durable, repairable, quiet in the woods, and relatively easy to maintain. When properly waxed, it sheds weather remarkably well. Unlike many modern materials, it also tends to look better after it has been used for a while.
Most importantly, it works.
Canvas Wasn't Always "Traditional"
Today we tend to associate canvas with traditional camping and bushcraft, but for most of its history there was nothing nostalgic about it. Canvas was simply one of the materials available for making hard-use equipment.
Heavy woven cloth was used extensively for sails, tarps, tents, work clothing, military equipment, bags, and eventually recreational camping gear. It was strong, relatively inexpensive, and could be repaired without specialized equipment.
Its obvious disadvantage was water.
Cotton absorbs moisture, so people developed ways to treat cloth to make it more resistant to the weather. Depending on the time, place, and intended use, cloth was treated with oils, waxes, fats, and other preparations. Sailors were treating sails and clothing long before anyone thought of selling "heritage" outdoor gear.
Eventually those treatments became more refined and commercial production made them more consistent, but the basic idea never really changed. Take a useful piece of woven cloth and work something into the fibers that helps prevent water from getting in.
It is a simple solution to a simple problem.
Waxed Canvas Isn't Waterproof
One misconception worth addressing is the idea that waxed canvas is waterproof. I generally prefer to call it water resistant.
Good waxed canvas will shed a surprising amount of rain. Water beads on the surface rather than immediately soaking into the cotton, which makes it very effective for bags, packs, tool carriers, and similar outdoor gear.
That doesn't mean you should fill a waxed canvas bag with your phone and throw it into the lake.
If you need something to be absolutely waterproof, there are modern materials that will do that job better. A quality dry bag is a good example. That's what it was designed to do.
The mistake is assuming that because another material is more waterproof, it must therefore be better for every other purpose. Material selection should always come back to what you expect the equipment to do. A bucksaw bag doesn't have the same requirements as a dry bag. Neither does an axe carrier, haversack, tinder bag, or tool roll. For those applications, canvas still makes a lot of sense.
Canvas Weight Matters
One thing I wish more manufacturers explained is the weight of the canvas they use.
"Waxed canvas" has become a selling point, but the words themselves don't tell you much. You can apply wax to lightweight cotton canvas and call it waxed canvas just as easily as you can apply it to heavy cotton duck.
The two products may look similar in a photograph, but they won't necessarily perform the same way.
Canvas is commonly described by its weight per square yard. You'll see 7-ounce, 10-ounce, 12-ounce, 18-ounce, and other weights. There are also traditional numbered duck classifications, which can make things even more confusing. For the average person buying outdoor gear, you don't need to become an expert in textile manufacturing. You should, however, understand that the weight of the cloth matters.
7-Ounce Canvas
Seven-ounce canvas is lightweight material. I generally think of it as being in the sailcloth range. One easy way to understand the difference is to hold a piece toward a bright light. With lightweight canvas, you can often see light through the weave.
There is nothing inherently wrong with that. Lightweight canvas has plenty of useful applications. If you're making something where flexibility and reduced weight are more important than abrasion resistance, a lighter fabric may be exactly what you want.
Wax doesn't make thin canvas heavy canvas.
10-Ounce Canvas
At around 10 ounces, we get into material I consider suitable for lightweight bags and general outdoor gear. It still has plenty of flexibility and doesn't add unnecessary weight to a product. It works well for pouches, organizers, lighter haversacks, and similar applications where the fabric doesn't need to support heavy steel tools or endure constant abrasion.
11 Ounces and Heavier
For most serious outdoor gear, I prefer to start at around 11 ounces and work up from there depending on what we're making. An 11- or 12-ounce canvas gives you a good balance of flexibility and durability. It has enough body to withstand regular outdoor use without making every piece of equipment unnecessarily heavy. When we get into equipment designed to carry axes, saws, or other heavy tools, heavier canvas may be appropriate.
15- to 18-ounce canvas gives us considerably more material to resist abrasion and hard use. That doesn't mean heavier is always better. I wouldn't make a small pouch from extremely heavy canvas just so I could advertise a bigger number. You end up adding weight and stiffness without gaining anything useful. The fabric should fit the job.
What About Numbered Duck?
If you spend enough time around canvas, you'll eventually run into terms such as #12 duck or #8 duck. This is an older classification system and it can be confusing because the number doesn't necessarily correspond with the ounces per square yard.
In fact, the system works almost backward from what most people would expect. A #12 cotton duck may be around 11½ to 12 ounces per square yard, while #8 duck can be around 18 ounces. The important thing for the average buyer is simply to understand that not all canvas is constructed the same way. Weight, yarn, weave, and construction all affect the finished material.
So if someone tells you a bag is made from "heavy-duty waxed canvas," it is perfectly reasonable to ask what weight canvas they're actually using. 11oz is generally the standard with #8 being almost too heavy to be practical for many applications.

Hand-Waxed Versus Machine-Waxed Canvas
There is another difference that doesn't get discussed very often, and that is how the wax gets into the canvas.
Most commercial waxed canvas today is produced with machinery. That makes sense. If you're producing hundreds or thousands of yards of material, you need a process that is fast, consistent, and repeatable. Machine waxing does that very well.
Hand waxing is a much slower process and follows the same basic principle used before industrial finishing became the norm. The treatment is physically worked into the cloth by hand rather than applied as part of a large-scale manufacturing process. That gives the person doing the waxing more control over the finished piece. You can feel where the material has accepted the wax and where it needs more. You can work additional treatment into seams, edges, folds, and other areas that may need extra attention. When re-waxing older gear, you can concentrate on the places where years of use have worn away the original treatment.
The finish also isn't perfectly uniform. I actually like that. A hand-waxed piece of canvas looks and feels like someone worked on it because someone did.
That doesn't mean machine-waxed canvas is bad. There is some excellent factory-waxed canvas available, and machine finishing gives manufacturers a level of consistency that would be difficult to achieve by hand.
At Campcraft Outdoors, we have continued to hand wax our canvas because it fits the way we make our gear. We aren't trying to make thousands of identical bags come off an assembly line. Each piece is handled individually anyway, so working the wax into the finished material is part of that process. It takes longer and that's probably the biggest reason most companies don't do it.
The Patina Is Part of the Appeal
One of my favorite things about waxed canvas is what happens after you stop worrying about keeping it new. A new piece of canvas gear looks nice, but an old piece usually looks better. It gets creased. It gets scratched. Wax moves around in the fabric. The high spots change color. It picks up a little campfire smoke, dirt, and whatever else you've managed to get into during the years you've owned it. Eventually it develops a patina that can't really be duplicated at the factory. Leather does the same thing.
There's a difference between something being worn and something being worn out, and good canvas can look extremely worn while still having years of useful life left in it.
I have always appreciated equipment like that. Outdoor gear should look like it has been outdoors.
You Can Fix It
Another reason canvas has survived is that you can work on it yourself. When the wax begins wearing thin, you can re-wax it. If the canvas eventually gets torn, it can usually be patched. If a seam fails, it can be sewn. None of this requires sending the product back to a laboratory or replacing an entire laminated panel because a coating has started separating.
That doesn't make canvas indestructible. Nothing is. It does make it maintainable.
I think we've lost some appreciation for that quality in modern equipment. There is something worthwhile about owning a piece of gear for long enough that you eventually have to repair it. Then you keep using it.
Around the Campfire
Canvas also makes sense around the kind of camp where I spend most of my time.
Bushcraft involves fire. Hot sparks and lightweight synthetic materials don't always get along particularly well. Anyone who has watched an ember instantly melt a small hole through an expensive piece of synthetic gear knows exactly what I'm talking about.
Cotton canvas isn't fireproof, and waxed canvas certainly shouldn't be treated as flame resistant. It can burn.
But heavy canvas handles the normal sparks and abuse around a working camp differently than many lightweight synthetic materials. That's one reason I don't think comparisons between canvas and modern backpacking fabrics are particularly useful unless we first establish what we're doing with them. If I'm walking the Appalachian Trail and counting every ounce in my pack, heavy waxed canvas probably isn't my first choice.
If I'm setting up a bushcraft camp, carrying an axe and saw, processing firewood, cooking over a fire, and working around sparks and rough timber, my priorities change considerably.
Canvas Is Heavy
There is no getting around this one.
Waxed canvas is heavier than most modern outdoor fabrics. A lot heavier in some cases.
If someone tells you otherwise, they're trying too hard to sell you canvas. It also requires occasional maintenance. It can be stiff when it's new. It isn't completely waterproof. Some wax finishes respond differently to hot and cold temperatures. And if your only goal is carrying the lightest possible equipment, there are much better materials available today.
Those aren't flaws so much as characteristics. I wouldn't choose a framing hammer to drive a finish nail, and I wouldn't choose a tack hammer to frame a house. Materials work the same way.
Why We Still Use It
Campcraft Outdoors has been making waxed canvas equipment for years, and we've stuck with it because it works for the kind of equipment we make. Our gear gets thrown into trucks. It gets tossed into canoes. It gets laid on wet ground and hung from trees. It carries axes, saws, cooking equipment, fire kits, and whatever else someone decides to stuff into it.
It gets dirty.
That's what it's for.
Over the years, we've also learned that simply saying something is made from waxed canvas doesn't tell the whole story. The underlying fabric matters. The weight matters. The construction matters. The stitching matters. The hardware matters. The way the canvas is waxed matters.
That's why we don't use the same weight of canvas for everything. A lightweight pouch doesn't have the same requirements as an axe and saw carrier. There is no reason to make gear heavier than it needs to be, but there is also no reason to save a few ounces by using material that isn't up to the job. Use the right material in the right place.
That's really all there is to it.

Why Waxed Canvas Refuses to Die
I suspect waxed canvas will eventually fall out of fashion again. That's fine. It has been around long enough to survive fashion. There will always be lighter materials. There will always be materials that are more waterproof. Next year someone will introduce another fabric with an impressive name and a list of technical specifications explaining why it is better than whatever we used last year.
Some of those materials really will be better. But somewhere there will still be an old canvas bag sitting behind the seat of a truck, covered in scratches and dirt, with a patch sewn into one corner and another coat of wax rubbed into it.
And it will still be doing its job. That's probably why waxed canvas refuses to die.
